Why Klarna Might Not Be the Best Fit for Your Squarespace Checkout

If you're selling products or services on your Squarespace website, you need to know about this sneaky change: Klarna has been automatically added to your checkout. Yep, without even asking you first. Rude, right?

Let’s break it down.

What Is Klarna?

Klarna is a buy now, pay later service. Sounds fab in theory, especially for customers who want flexibility. But it might not be the vibe for your business.

If you’re using Stripe or Squarespace Payments, Klarna is now enabled by default. That means your customers may see payment plans at checkout… whether you want them to or not.

Why This Matters

Here’s why that default setting could be problematic:

  • 💸 You may not get paid upfront. Klarna takes the financial risk, which means your payout process might shift.

  • 🧩 It might not match your brand. Especially if you offer high-ticket coaching or digital services, Klarna could send mixed messages.

  • 🌍 It’s not available everywhere. This can confuse international customers if they see Klarna as an option but can’t actually use it.

  • 💡 It changes customer expectations. If you're positioning your offer as a premium investment, Klarna can subtly undermine that perception.

How To Turn Klarna Off In Squarespace

Good news: turning Klarna off is quick and easy. Here’s how to do it depending on which payment system you're using.

If you’re using Stripe:

  1. Go to Settings in your Squarespace dashboard.

  2. Click on Payments.

  3. Under Stripe, click Manage.

  4. Look for Klarna - it will likely be turned on automatically.

  5. Toggle Klarna off.

  6. Click Save.

Done and dusted.

If you’re using Squarespace Payments:

  1. Go to Settings in your dashboard.

  2. Click on Payments.

  3. Under Squarespace Payments, click Manage Settings.

  4. Choose the Payment Methods tab

  5. Find Klarna and toggle it off.

  6. Click Save.

That’s it. Klarna will no longer show up like an uninvited guest at your checkout party.

Final Thoughts

Look, Klarna isn’t bad. But it did sneak in without telling you, and it might not align with how you want to run your business.

So always check your settings, especially after a Squarespace update. Your payment methods should work for you, not just for Squarespace.
